XAVIER CHINA

We have collaborated with British fine bone china specialists Xavier China to present the Kelling Collection, a range of fine bone china tableware in Kelling's signature bold colours and patterns, with contrasting trims.

Reviving the beauty of fine bone china for modern day living, Xavier China combines centuries-old craftsmanship with contemporary design to restore English fine bone china as the queen of porcelain. Hand-crafted in Stoke-On-Trent using techniques that have been passed down through the generations, we have worked together to produce a classic and colourful collection with day-to-day living in mind.

Emma Deterding, Founder and Creative Director of Kelling Designs and Kelling Home comments: "We wanted to create a collection that featured bold colours with coloured rims that didn't wash off in the dishwasher. It's been a journey learning about how a kiln effects colours, especially when you put pink on orange, but Charlotte and Nicky at Xavier have been brilliant and I think we have created something that will be bold and fun on your dining table. Enjoy!"

The process starts with the main coloured borders and trim tramlines for the contrasting edges being printed onto ceramic decals using traditional silk screen printing. Each pigment is mixed by hand and applied to the printing machine, and both colours are printed on the decal with an extra layer called 'cover flux' which adds an extra-level of protection for longevity.

The decals are then delivered to a different factory where the china is hand-crafted, with the clay being filtered twice to make sure any impurities are removed before the ware is fired with a clear glaze. The printed colour decals are then sponged onto the ware by hand before being fired once more.

Finally, the trim colour is mixed and painted on the edge of the plate/mug by hand and the pieces are all fired for a final time. This is known as 'over-painting' and the extra layer is added at the end to achieve that 'rolled edge' finish to showcase the hand-crafted and luxurious nature of the china.

The collection is truly hardwearing and perfect for day-to-day use, being microwave and dishwasher friendly, as well as being chip-resistant, creating a collection of fine bone china tableware that is as practical as it is beautiful and luxurious. With 6 gorgeous colours available across dinner, pudding and side plates, soup bowls and mugs, you can use them individually or mix and match for a multicolour set.
